First in the Region to Offer Expanded Access to Promising New Treatment for Advanced Pancreatic Cancer
Nebraska Cancer Specialists (NCS) is among a select group of oncology practices in the nation offering eligible patients with advanced pancreatic cancer access to the investigational therapy, Daraxonrasib, through the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Expanded Access Program (EAP).
The program provides eligible patients with metastatic pancreatic cancer whose disease has progressed after chemotherapy the opportunity to receive this promising investigational treatment while it continues through the FDA review process.
Daraxonrasib targets RAS mutations, genetic alterations that drive the growth of the vast majority of pancreatic cancers. The therapy has attracted national attention and has demonstrated encouraging outcomes for patients with previously treated metastatic pancreatic cancer.
“Pancreatic cancer remains one of the most challenging cancers to treat, making advances like this incredibly meaningful for patients and their families,” said Dr. Joel Michalski, president and medical oncologist at Nebraska Cancer Specialists. “Through the Expanded Access Program, we’re able to provide eligible patients with access to this investigational therapy now, rather than asking them to wait for the FDA approval process to be completed.”
Unlike a clinical trial, an Expanded Access Program (EAP) allows physicians to request access to an investigational medication outside of a research study for eligible patients who have exhausted standard treatment options. While daraxonrasib has not yet received FDA approval, the EAP offers an important pathway for patients to receive the therapy under physician supervision before it becomes commercially available.
The program is currently available for patients with previously treated metastatic pancreatic cancer and is not intended for newly diagnosed metastatic disease, earlier-stage pancreatic cancer, or other cancer types.
More than 90% of pancreatic cancers are driven by KRAS or related RAS mutations, making therapies that target these mutations one of the most promising areas of pancreatic cancer research.
