Survivor & Supporter: Laurel’s Journey of Strength & Service

Born in Denver, Colorado, and raised in the plains of Cheyenne, Wyoming, Laurel’s life has been a testament to resilience and dedication.

For the past six decades, she has called Nebraska her home, carving out a fulfilling career in human resources while raising two sons as a single mother. Now, even in her golden years, Laurel continues to work part-time as a driver for Enterprise Car Rental, embodying a spirit of energy and service.

In May 2022, Laurel embarked on a new chapter as a volunteer. Her granddaughter, Carter, an employee at NCS, mentioned the need for volunteers in the infusion suite. Knowing Laurel’s remarkable journey as a four-time cancer survivor, Carter suggested she might find fulfillment in supporting those undergoing treatment. With her unique perspective and unyielding strength, Laurel knew she could offer invaluable support and comfort to patients.

Laurel now dedicates herself to volunteering three times a month. Her presence in the infusion suite is more than just a helping hand; it’s an extension of hope and understanding. She knows firsthand the challenges and fears faced by those battling cancer, and she leans on her own experiences to foster a comforting environment.
“The most rewarding part of being a volunteer,” Laurel shares, “is just being able to visit with the patients, listening to their concerns or needs, and trying to make them comfortable.” Her dedication to ensuring the well-being of patients is evident in her every action, from a comforting word to a small gesture of kindness. She takes pride in being there for patients, providing not just physical assistance but emotional support.

Laurel’s journey from a cancer survivor to a volunteer has been transformative. She finds her time spent at NCS to be the most rewarding experience, a sentiment of her commitment to helping others. Her story is one of resilience, compassion, and dedication to making a difference in the lives of those who need it most.

In a world where the smallest acts of kindness can have the most significant impact, Laurel stands as a shining example of how one person’s journey can inspire and support many. Her story is a reminder that out of our own battles and triumphs, we can find the strength to lift others, creating a ripple of hope and healing that extends far beyond ourselves.
