Low-Dose Radiation Therapy for Arthritis
Radiation therapy isn’t only used to treat cancer.
Low-dose radiation therapy (LDRT) may also be an option for some people living with painful osteoarthritis, particularly when medications, injections, physical therapy or other treatments have not provided enough relief. LDRT uses a much lower dose of radiation than what is typically used to treat cancer and is designed to reduce inflammation within the affected joint, which can help decrease pain and improve mobility.
Treatment is noninvasive and delivered in a series of short outpatient visits. Low-dose radiation therapy may be considered for osteoarthritis affecting joints such as the knees, hips, shoulders, hands, feet or ankles. Because every patient’s arthritis and overall health are different, an NCS radiation oncologist will evaluate your condition, symptoms and previous treatments to determine whether LDRT may be right for you.
