Prostate Cancer Screening PSA Blood Draw at Husker Harvest Days Saves Lives
Wood River, NE (August 1, 2024)—Nebraska Cancer Specialists, in partnership with the Nebraska Prostate Cancer Alliance, will once again host a free PSA blood draw at Husker Harvest Days.
Prostate cancer is the most common cancer among men in the United States, with an estimated 1 in 8 men being diagnosed with the disease in their lifetime. Early detection is key to successful treatment, and a PSA blood test can help detect prostate cancer early when it is most treatable.
Last year at Husker Harvest Days, Nebraska Cancer Specialists staff performed 287 blood draws, of which 11 recommended follow-up.
One of those was 42-year-old Aaron Bombeck of Kenesaw, Nebraska.
“It was towards the end of the day, and one of the nurses coaxed our group in and encouraged the screening,” says Aaron. “Prostate cancer was not on my radar, but I thought it wouldn’t hurt to get my PSA checked. I had never had it checked before.”
Aaron received his PSA level results via mail, which indicated that he should follow up with his doctor.
“My doctor checked my PSA level again, and it had risen since Husker Harvest Days. He recommended a biopsy, which revealed I had prostate cancer. I had no symptoms – if I hadn’t gotten my PSA levels checked at Husker Harvest Days, I would never have known,” stated Bombeck.
“I am so grateful for the PSA screening,” said Bombeck. “It probably saved my life.”
Nebraska Cancer Specialists encourages all men over 40 to get a PSA blood test. Through the generous support of the Nebraska Prostate Cancer Alliance, the PSA blood draw is free to anyone attending or exhibiting at Husker Harvest Days.
“By raising awareness about the importance of regular screenings and empowering individuals to take charge of their health, we can make a profound impact in the battle against this disease,” stated Harold Pharoah, President of Nebraska Prostate Cancer Alliance.
